Healthy Diet For Diabetic Patients

When somebody is diagnosed with diabetes, it is very important to keep his/her blood sugar levels under strict control. A very effective way to control your diabetes is through controlling your diet. There are different foods which are useful in controlling the blood sugar levels. The following is a discussion about such foods:–

(a) Fruits — Fruits like apples and pomegranate have many beneficial effects for diabetics. Apples contain pectin which help in the detoxification of the body. Apples also help to reduce the insulin requirement of the body. A regular dose of pomegranate juice lowers the risk of atherosclerosis. Grapefruits are also good for diabetic patients.

(b) Vegetables — Vegetables like bitter gourd, broccoli, spinach, beans etc. should be consumed daily by diabetic patients. Particularly, bitter gourd is very useful as it contains plant insulin. Juice of bitter gourd should be consumed twice in empty stomach, which helps to control blood sugar. It can also be cooked like other vegetables.

(c) Herbs and seeds — There are many herbs and seeds which should be included in the diet for diabetic patients. Gymnema sylvestre is a Ayurvedic herb which helps to control both type 1 and type 2 diabetes by promoting the growth of new beta cells in the pancreas. Blackberry seeds and neem seeds are also good for controlling diabetes. These can be consumed in the powdered form.

(d) Spices — Spices like cinnamon, fenugreek etc. may be consumed to control blood sugar. Cinnamon is very effective as it improves the glucose metabolism in the body of diabetic patients. It also helps to reduce the resistance towards insulin. The recommended dose is 1/2 tsp daily.

(e) Garlic — Raw garlic, if consumed daily, helps to reduce sugar levels. The normal dose is about 4gms/day.

(f) Vinegar — Vinegar has been found to be very useful in controlling sugar levels. Research has shown that if 2 tsp of vinegar is taken before meals, it helps to control the spikes in blood sugar, which are very common after meals.
